Professor Chen Hui from MIT Sloan School of Management was invited by Lingnan College to deliver a two-day course about ‘Financial Reform’ from June 11 to June 12, 2018. This course was jointly organized by both MIT and the MBA Educational Center of our college, and was one of the MIT series of selective courses in the MBA program.

Through his rich work experience in finance and the Internet, Professor Chen gave the audience an interesting Finance course via vivid examples.

Professor Chen started the lecture by reviewing the huge changes of the financial market structure in the past ten years. The course mainly focused on how financial technology has changed and promoted the development of traditional finance, which was divided into 7 parts. These include (1) Comparison between modern finance and traditional finance, (2) Finance in Financial Technology, (3) Technology in Financial Technology, (4) Data-driven decision making, (5) How to use large data on lending decisions, (6) Quantitative Investment, and (7) Innovation of payment methods. During the whole course, Professor Chen elaborated in detail on how modern Internet technology had explored and used data, and innovated in different sections in finance. Professor Chen also communicated with students and brought a brand-new perspective towards financial technology.

Meanwhile, Professor Chen emphasized that although data reform has brought a series of disruptive innovations to the financial market, we should see its value rationally. Questions like the convenience, punctuality, reliability of data from being explored and applied, as well as risk control and supervision when using the data need to be further investigated and practiced.

At the end of the course, Professor Chen responded to questions raised by teachers and students present. The two-day course came to an end with a warm applause.
